New & Replacement Openers

Signs Your Garage Door Opener May Need Replacing

An opener that still runs isn't always one worth keeping. These are the situations where homeowners most often decide to replace the opener instead of repairing it.

Repeated Repairs

When the same opener keeps needing service, the repair costs can add up to more than a replacement would.

A Failing Motor or Control Board

A motor that strains, or a logic board that has stopped responding, is often the point where replacing makes more sense than repairing.

Grinding, Rattling or Shaking

Loud or rough operation, or a unit that shakes the ceiling, can be a sign that internal parts are wearing out.

Remotes and Keypads That Stopped Working

Sometimes it's a battery or programming fix. If the receiver itself has failed, a new opener may be the answer.

You Want a Different Type of Opener

Some homeowners switch to a quieter belt-drive opener, or to a wall-mounted opener that frees up the ceiling.

You're Getting a New Door

A new garage door is a natural time to confirm the opener still suits the door's size and weight.

Not sure whether to repair or replace? Our garage door opener repair service starts with an inspection and a straightforward recommendation.

Opener Types

Belt-Drive, Chain-Drive & Wall-Mounted (Jackshaft) Openers

We install and replace three types of garage door openers. The right one depends on your garage, your door and how you use the space.

Belt-Drive (Ceiling-Mounted)

Mounted on the ceiling, with a belt that moves the door along a rail. Belt-drive openers are generally a quieter option, which can matter when the garage is attached to living space or sits below a bedroom.

Chain-Drive (Ceiling-Mounted)

Also mounted on the ceiling, using a metal chain to move the door. A common, practical choice for many residential garages, especially when the quietest possible operation isn't the top priority.

Wall-Mounted / Jackshaft

Mounted on the wall beside the door and connected to the door's torsion shaft, so there's no rail running across the ceiling. That frees up overhead space, which can help with storage, a high ceiling or limited headroom. Because it works with a torsion spring system, we confirm the door's setup first.

Not sure which fits your garage? We'll look at the garage, the door and how you use the space, and recommend a type.

Before We Install

We Check the Door Before the Opener Goes In

An opener is only as good as the door it lifts. A door that is out of balance, or has worn springs, cables, rollers or tracks, forces the opener to work harder than it was built to and can shorten its life. A new opener shouldn't be used to cover up a mechanical problem with the door.

So before installing, we look at how the door moves and balances and check the parts that carry its weight. When we install, we adjust the opener, align and test the safety sensors, and confirm the door reverses properly before we leave.

If the check turns up a problem, we'll tell you what it is and what your options are. A broken spring is a job for garage door spring repair; other door problems are covered by our garage door repair service.

We check the door's balance and condition and confirm which type of opener fits your garage.

03

We Install the Opener

We mount and connect the new opener and set up remotes or keypads. When we're replacing an opener, the old one comes out first.

What's included depends on the opener you choose and the job, so not every installation includes everything below. We'll confirm what applies to yours.

Wi-Fi & App Setup

Wi-Fi connectivity and app setup, on openers that offer it.

Old Opener Removal

What Affects the Cost of a New Opener

We don't quote a price without knowing your setup, because opener installations vary from garage to garage. These are the things that make the difference:

  • The type of opener: belt-drive, chain-drive or wall-mounted.
  • The door: its size and weight, and whether it's a single or double door.
  • Features: Wi-Fi and app connectivity, battery backup, and the number of remotes or keypads. Availability depends on the opener.
  • The condition of the door: whether the springs, cables, rollers or tracks need attention first.
  • Replacing or starting fresh: whether there's an existing opener to remove and dispose of.
  • Who supplies the opener: one we recommend, or one you've already bought.

Call or request service and describe your garage, and we'll talk through the options.

Already Bought an Opener?

Installing an Opener You Supply

If you've already bought an opener, we may be able to install it. Whether we can depends on compatibility with your door and garage, and on the installation requirements for that particular opener. We'll confirm before booking.

When you call, it helps to have:

  • The make and model of the opener
  • Whether it's ceiling-mounted or wall-mounted
  • Your door's size and type, and whether it has torsion springs
  • What's in the garage today, such as an existing opener to remove

If the opener isn't a good fit for your door, we'll tell you why and what the options are.

Questions

Garage Door Opener Installation FAQ

Should I repair or replace my garage door opener?
If the opener has one isolated fault, repair is often worth it. If it's old, keeps breaking, or the repair would cost close to a new unit, replacing usually makes more sense. We'll inspect it and give you a straightforward recommendation. See our opener repair page, or call to talk it through.
What types of openers do you install?
We install and replace belt-drive and chain-drive ceiling-mounted openers, and wall-mounted (jackshaft) openers.
Which type of opener is right for my garage?
It depends on your garage and priorities. Belt-drive is generally the quieter choice. Chain-drive is a common, practical option. A wall-mounted (jackshaft) opener frees up ceiling space and suits some garages better. We'll go through your door and garage with you before recommending one.
Can you install an opener I bought myself?
Often, yes, subject to compatibility and the installation requirements for that opener. Tell us the make and model and a little about your door, and we'll confirm before scheduling.
Will a new opener work with my existing door?
Usually, as long as the door is in good working order. We check its balance, springs and hardware first, and if something needs attention we'll explain it before installing the opener.
Do I need a new opener when I get a new garage door?
Not always. An opener in good working condition can often be reused if it suits the new door's size and weight. We'll check when we look at the job. See our new garage door installation page for more.
Can you set up remotes, keypads, Wi-Fi or battery backup?
Depending on the opener, yes: remote controls and wireless keypads, Wi-Fi connectivity and app setup, and battery backup options. Not every opener offers all of these, so we'll confirm what's available with the model you choose.
Will you remove my old opener?
Removal and disposal of the old opener can be part of the installation, depending on the job. We'll confirm when we schedule.
