Is Your Garage Door Off Track?
A door can come off its track suddenly or drift out of alignment over time. These are the signs we hear about most.
Rollers Out of the Track
One or more rollers have popped out of the track, or you can see a gap between the rollers and the track.
Crooked or Uneven Door
One side of the door sits higher than the other, or the door hangs at an angle.
Stuck Partway
The door stops at the same spot, jams, or won't move even though the opener is running.
Loose or Frayed Cable
A cable is hanging slack, has come off its drum, or has visibly frayed or snapped.
Bent or Damaged Track
A track is dented, bent, pulled away from the wall, or no longer lines up straight.
Grinding, Scraping or Popping
Noise as the door moves can point to a worn roller or a track that is out of alignment.
What to Do If Your Garage Door Is Off Track
An off-track door can be unstable, and garage door cables and springs hold a lot of tension. Until a technician has looked at it:
- Stop using the door. Don't press the wall button or remote, and don't run the opener on a door that is crooked, jammed or off its track.
- Don't force it. Don't try to push the door back into the track or pull it up or down by hand. That can bend the track, damage the panels and make the repair bigger.
- Leave cables and springs alone. Don't touch the cables, the springs, the drums or the brackets they attach to.
- Keep clear of an unstable door. If the door is partly open or hanging unevenly, keep people, pets and vehicles away from it and don't stand or walk under it.
- Be careful with the manual release. If the door is raised or hanging crooked, pulling the release can let it drop.
Then call us and describe what you see. If it can't wait, see our emergency garage door repair page.
Off-Track Doors, Cables, Tracks & Rollers
Four related repairs for a residential garage door that is out of its track or no longer moves the way it should.
Off-Track Garage Door Repair
We look at how the door came off, check the track, rollers, cables and balance, and repair what's needed so the door runs along its track again.
Garage Door Cable Replacement
A frayed, slipped or snapped cable is replaced. Cables are under tension, so this is work for a technician, not a do-it-yourself job.
Track Repair & Adjustment
A track that is loose, misaligned or bent is repaired and adjusted so the rollers move freely and the door travels straight.
Roller Replacement
Worn, cracked or noisy rollers are replaced so the door moves smoothly and stays in the track.
Why Cables, Tracks, Rollers & Springs Go Together
A garage door comes off its track for more than one reason. A cable that slips or snaps, a spring that has lost its balance, a bent track, a worn roller, or an impact can each be the cause, and one failure often involves another.
Because these parts work together, we check the whole door rather than only the part that looks broken. If a spring is part of the problem, see our broken spring repair page. For a wider look at what we fix, see garage door repair.

What Affects the Cost of an Off-Track Repair
We don't publish a price here because the job depends on what is actually wrong. The main factors are:
- Which parts are affected: a roller, a cable, a section of track, or several of them.
- Whether the door was damaged when it came off the track, such as bent or cracked panels.
- Whether a spring is also involved, since springs and cables work together.
- The size and weight of the door and the condition of the hardware.
If the door itself is badly damaged, we'll tell you what can be repaired and what can't. In that case you may want to look at new garage door installation. For general background, see How Much Does Garage Door Repair Cost in Massachusetts?
